The Best Bowflex Dumbbells – Which Dumbbells Are Best For You?

Bowflex dumbbells have become very popular and are among the top sellers of adjustable dumbbells. More and more people that want to workout at home are buying adjustable dumbbells.

There are different types of adjustable dumbbells.

First, you have the old school adjustable dumbbells with the long bar that gets in the way during certain exercises and plates that you slide on and off that are held on with a collar you spin on and off.

You also have the bock style like the powerblock which all of the weights fit inside of each other and you use a U shaped pin to adjust the different weight. Adjusting that U shaped pin can be very annoying and that pin can and will slip out if you’re not holding the dumbbell in the correct position (I know from personal experience). The last thing you want is for the dumbbell to fall apart when your doing dumbbell flys and land on your chest.

Next, we have the dial type like the bowflex dumbbells. They have a dial at each end of the dumbbell that you turn to the desired weight. They also have a pad that they sit in that holds the weights that you are not using. It’s really quick and simple to adjust the weight.

Which Bowflex Dumbbells Are Right For You?

That depends on your goals. Do you want to lose fat, gain some muscle and strength, get big and bulky, maintain the muscle you have? Or do you want to just add some resistance training to your workouts? Do you want hi-tech dumbbells? Or do you just want the most bang for your buck?

If you want to lose fat, gain some muscle and strength, maintain the muscle you have, add some resistance training to your workout, and get the most bang for your buck. I would recommend the Bowflex Sellecttech 552.

If you want to lose fat, gain some muscle and strength, maintain the muscle you have, add some resistance training to your workouts, and have some hi-tech bells and whistles in your dumbbells I would recommend the Bowflex Selecttech 560.

If you want to get big and bulky and gain a lot of muscle and strength. I would recommend the Bowflex Selecttech 1090.

Benefits of Bowflex Dumbbells.

Less joint pain. When you use dumbbells your movements are more natural. Let’s use the bench press for example. When you’re using a bar your hands are going to be on the bar and you can’t move them in any direction. When you use Bowflex dumbbells your hands can move from side to side in a more natural movement.

More range of motion. When you use dumbbells you can go further engaging more muscle which means more gains and more calories burned during your workout.

Bowflex dumbbells are a huge space saver.  There is no need for 15 different pairs of dumbbells on a rack that takes up a lot of space. I slide my bowflex dumbbells under my adjustable bench when I’m not using them saving tons of space.

Quick and easy to change the weight. Out of all the adjustable dumbbells, I have tried the bowflex dumbbells are the quickest and easiest to change weight. You don’t have to slide plates on and off and you don’t have to mess around with a U shaped pin that might slide out.

More exercises. Let’s face it there are just some exercises you can not do with a barbell like flys, lateral raises, bent over raises, etc.

Safety. If you are someone who works out alone like I do a barbell is not always the best option. We will use the bench press for example again. If you have a barbell loaded with weight and all of the sudden you get a pain or you just can’t get that last rep up now you have a barbell sitting on your chest. With bowflex dumbbells, you can always lower one dumbbell at a time and avoid injury.

As you can see Bowflex has 3 different dumbbells The selecttech 552, 1090, and 560. We are going to take a closer look at all of them. First, we can take a look at the bowflex selecttech 552. I own a pair of the 552 dumbbells and I don’t know why I waited so long to buy them.

The Selecttech 552 ranges in weight from 5 to 52.5 lbs. Yep, you guessed it that’s why they are the 552 model. The weight increments are 2.5 lbs from 5 to 25lbs after that the weight increments are 5lbs. So you have 5, 7.5, 10, 12.5, 15, 17.5, 20, 22.5, 25, 30, 35, 40, 45, 50, 52.5lbs.

That is equal to having 15 pairs of dumbbells all wrapped up in 1. If you were to go out and buy those 15 pairs of dumbbells separately it would cost you $775. The Sellecttech 552 is only $299 (price may vary). You would be saving $476.

What I really like about these Bowflex dumbbells are the weight increments. At the low weights, the increments are 2.5lbs. For any of you who like to do shoulder workouts that involve lateral raises or bent over raises. You know that 5lbs increments can be too much.

For those of you who like to do drop sets sometimes, a 5lbs drop is too much. I like to do drop sets sometimes and I was worried that I wouldn’t be able to switch the weight fast enough.

At first, I struggled a little getting the weights lined up in the pad but after a few days, I could get the weights in the pad change the weight and picked up and going again in just a few seconds.

Bowflex dumbbells are flat on the bottom for 2 reasons 1 so they don’t roll away. 2 you have to put the flat bottom down in the pad just make sure the bright red bowflex sign is up when you put them in the pad and they will line up great.

The dial on each end of the dumbbell is very easy to turn for changing weights. The numbers are easy to read the only thing you have to watch out for is getting the right weight on each dial.

You can select 40 on one end of the dumbbell and 45 on the other end and pick up the dumbbell without problems. You can select any combination of weights and pick the dumbbell up without problems.

Selecttech 552 bowflex dumbbells have a rubber grip on the handle that is very comfortable. The grip is a little bit bigger around than a conventional dumbbell.

I don’t have big hands by any means and personally, for me, I like the feel of the bowflex dumbbells better in my hands compared to conventional dumbbells.

Bowflex dumbbells are longer than conventional dumbbells. The selecttech 552 is 15.75″ L x 8″ W x 9″ H (40 x 20 x 23 cm) (Each). If you are afraid of hitting your head while doing shoulder presses don’t worry if you use the proper form you will not hit your head.

The bowflex dumbbells have plastic around the metal weights. So if you do accidentally bump your head or pinch your finger between the dumbbells you will have a little protection.

The selecttech 552 dumbbells come with a 2-year warranty.
